We spent the night with Kiko's cousins in Vina del Mar and then left for Maintancillo, a beach town further north, to go for the day to visit with Sapo, Qki (Cookie) and their kids, Julian and Pastura. We decided that we would come back to Vina to spend the night at the cousins' apartment so we did not take overnight stuff. Kiko's cousin, Bruno, came with us. We like to call him Bruno the Surfer.
I loved this little town. So cute, one street on the beach with lots of shops and restaurants. Qki's dad's place is right smack in the very center of town, on the main beach road. We walked down the boardwalk and sand to get empanadas, cokes and a coffee for me. And ice cream for the kids. Kiko ran into an old school friend on the walk and they joined us for a bit.
The beach was awesome! We decided to rent Tristan a wetsuit and it was a good decision - he spent the entire time in the water and finally got the boogie boarding down! He's such a little fish! We also rented a long board and wet suit for me. Kiko borrowed a wetsuit from Sapo. It was white. A full body white wetsuit. He's a really, really good sport. How loving of him to wear it and let me rent one. Did I mention that they had a yellow rash guard for him as well? That's some real love, right there.
We had such a wonderful time!!!
I love this family and it was such an awesome day to be with them in a gorgeous place having fun with our kids!
Sapo took Tristan surfing and helped him learn to boogie board by teaching him how to catch the wave and giving him pushes into the surf (getting wiped out himself!) after riding with him for ages. Julian is the best babysitter - really chilled out and patient with the kids. Tanner really, really, really likes him. And they have the same hair.
We stayed late at the beach, as you do in Chile, and decided that we should spend the night after all. Somehow, I should have known this and packed accordingly but we made do with what we had! After much searching for a "deal", we ended up just renting the cabana or apartment above Qki's and staying right there (which was perfect, after all.)
That night, we went to a bbq or "asado" at Sapo's sister's house. The kids had fun watching tv in Spanish and Tanner even went to sleep in a guest room. Have I mentioned how late these asados are at night?! A very different thing for us. You show up around 8:30 or 9 pm and the host starts the carbon (like charcholized wood?) and it has to get nice and hot before you can cook (maybe an hour if done right, if not it can be 2 hours but that has only happened with us) and first up is Chori Pan (sausages grilled and served on grilled bread rolls (that were baked fresh that day). After that, the meat starts coming around and can be cuts of beef or lamb, occasionally chicken and sometimes fish. Salads are served with this part of the meal and usually consist of chopped green or iceberg lettuce served with oil and lemon juice and salt, another salad of sliced tomatoes, onion, cilantro and oil & vinegar, and potato salad. Lots of bread! And it is delicious bread.
Dessert is called postre and is usually reserved for after the 2:30 pm lunch. If it's a special dinner there may be dessert and by that point it is 11:30 or after midnight and you are stuffed like a piggy and think you might burst. But you eat it anyway and eventually roll yourself into bed.
Have you seen all the Chilean wines available now - imagine what it's like here in Chile with all the wines you never see! An incredible selection in variety and price (maybe the only thing cheaper than in the US is the wine and alcohol?!)
We are eating far too much. It's very good to see how much Qki eats because she's skinny and still eats - just small amounts.
The next morning bread was delivered to our place and everyone came up to eat on the deck. They had coffee and supplies to bring and it was so lovely to be together, watching the waves come in, hearing the ocean, and chatting.
Another gorgeous day on the beach and we drove back to Vina quite late where we dropped off Bruno, picked up our luggage and drove back to Santiago.
Phew.
Cold, cold water. Rented wetsuit. Leash. Ready for action in the Pacific Ocean.
Bruno gives some tips to Kiko
The guys
Sapo!
Little Ripper
He insists on going all the way back into the beach and keeps going after the wave is over!
Hitting the surf with Bruno.
Julian, Kiko, Bruno, Sapo and Tristan - giving a "Kick Buttowski!"
Sapo going out on the long board.
Sapo helpig Tristan back out into the water - it was pretty shallow in many places and then the bottom would just drop out!
Sapo letting Tristan use his pro board.
Sapo riding a wave in with Tristan while Daddy cheered!
He got the feeling of riding the waves and is hooked for a lifetime. Thank you, Jesus. I know You like to ride those waves too - is that why You made them?!
The rest of the crew relaxing on the beach.
Julian, Sapo and Tristan riding in together!
Having a very, very good time!
Getting a little help from Daddy!
Happy guy! And just wanting to get back out there - no more pictures, mom!
Tristan learning to surf with Sapo on the long board and little waves!
Tanner just loves to watch the action from the beach. He doesn't like cold water. At all.
He's up again!
Wiping out!
Back up again!
And realizes that just sitting back down on the board is nicer than wiping out.
A big drop in for Tristan but he nailed it. His confidence is growing in all sports as he is constantly getting new challenges here in Chile.
Pastura takes some turns on the skate board with a little help from Dad and big brother!
Skateparks have nice slides too.
